The rise of T20 Cricket in India

T20’s have drastically changed the dimensions of this game and have made it look quite entertaining. The advent of T20 leagues across various states of India has changed the face of cricket in India.

These leagues have helped the players gain more eyeballs as one good performance can fetch them an entry into the Indian premier league. More ever commercialization of these leagues has helped the domestic cricketers to become financially more stable. These leagues have opened new avenues for a lot of young budding cricketers where they are provided with a platform to showcase their skills.

Here, we’ll throw light on some players who emerged from such domestic T20 leagues and made it big in the Indian cricketing fraternity.

Shivam Dube – Mumbai Premier League (MPL)

Shivam Dube emerged to be a very handy all-rounder who went on to play for India in the shorter format. The Mumbaikars witnessed his hard-hitting ability when he played for Shivaji Park lions in the inauguration year of T20 Mumbai. Wankhede witnessed a ‘Dube storm’ where he almost pulled of a stunner for his team. This knock grabbed the attention of many, as he was picked by RCB in the upcoming auction.

Narayan Jagadeesan – Tamilnadu Premier League (TNPL)

Jagadeesan entered the auction with a reputation of being a very promising opener. His healthy strike rate and ability to play the role of an anchor made sure he was under the watchful eyes of CSK’s Stephen Fleming. He has been an integral part of the super king's setup for the past 3 years.

Thangarasu Natarajan

While this has now become a household name for every Indian fan, Natarajan is known to be a domestic star who emerged from this state domestic leagues and went on to have a successful Indian Premier League with the Sunrisers.

His ability to bowl yorkers made sure he bags an Indian team contract. He was selected for the Indian T20 setup for the series down under. Where he went on to play all three formats and was successful throughout his outings.

Shahrukh Khan – Tamilnadu Premier League

The name might confuse you at first, but this Shahrukh is known for his six-hitting abilities. He was the talk of the town in the recently concluded IPL auction when he bagged an IPL contract of a whopping 5.25 crore with Punjab Kings. He also was a consistent performer in the state and interstate T20 leagues.

T20 a game changer!

The bright side of such leagues is these inexperienced players get to learn a lot from their counterparts as they share the dressing room with international players. The T20 leagues have brought in commercialization in sports, as the structures and governance of these leagues are such that it provides security to the players, as they get paid well.

While these leagues have been doing a fair bit of a job in improving the quality of players, these players also need to understand that to make it big at the later stage of their career, they need to be equally good and well equipped for the purest form of cricket which is known to be – The Test.
